Extended Sculpture Collection - General Francis Marion

Commissioned for a Berkeley County government office building, Francis Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox” was a hero of the Revolutionary War in South Carolina and was born in Berkeley County. Artist Garland Weeks worked closely with historians and others to accurately portray Marion. No visible renditions exist of the general; therefore Weeks presented him on the basis of the written word. This is a fine example of art presenting a story as the bronze even includes the “sweet potatoes” on which Marion and his troops survived during the war.
